Have you ever wondered how Google ranks your website in search results? Google uses many factors to determine whether your site provides value to its readers or not. There are many factors on which Google decides to rank a website on its first page, especially on the first position.
One of those factors is called Domain Authority.
What is Domain Authority
Domain Authority (DA) is a ranking metric developed by Moz to predict how well a website will rank on the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs)
Domain Authority is not an actual metric used by Google in determining search ranks, and it does not affect SERPs.
Moz developed this metric by combining many factors, such as the number of quality backlinks, linking root domains, and many more.
A Domain Authority score ranges from a scale of 1 to 100. Some of the top websites, like Amazon, Facebook, have the highest DA on the internet.
Why would you want to increase your DA?
As you increase your DA, the better the traffic and ranking.
A low DA can result in a lower ranking, which means you will lose a massive amount of traffic. You cannot just make a couple of changes to your website and expect your DA to skyrocket.
It is a long process, and it will take some time. However, there are some steps that you can do to improve your Domain Authority.
How To Check Your Domain Authority
You might be wondering, what is your domain authority, right?
You can check your DA by using Moz’s Link Explorer, the MozBar (a free SEO toolbar), or in the SERP Analysis section of their Keyword Explorer.
So what is considered a good DA? Let’s see.
What is a good Domain Authority
Moz decides Domain Authority on a 100 point logarithmic scale. This means that it is comparatively easy to grow your DA score from 20 to 30 than increasing it from 70 to 80.
Generally, sites with a vast number of high-quality external links (such as Wikipedia and Google) are at the top of the Domain Authority scale.
Small websites with a low amount of inbound links will have a lower DA score. A brand new site always starts with a Domain Authority score of 1.
Domain Authority is meant to be a predictor of a site’s ranking ability; gaining Domain Authority shouldn’t be your only goal. Look at the DA scores of the websites that you are competing with, intended to have a higher score than your competitor.
How To Increase Your Website’s DA
So what are the strategies that you need to use to increase your Domain Authority? Let’s see.
1.Create High-Quality Content
Content is King. It doesn’t matter how much effort you put in to increase your site’s DA; if you don’t write a great article that provides value to your users, it won’t rank higher in Google results.
Google always wants to provide well-written content, with quality to its users. The aim is to make it simple for the user to get what they’re searching for.
They won’t rank articles that were written for the sake of ranking their websites.
Write original content with great value so that Google, as well as people, will love it. Research shows that a well-written, long article has a higher probability of earning quality backlinks than other articles.
So it’s a win-win situation for all. Your visitors will turn into your subscribers, and your content will rank higher in the search results, which will bring more visitors to your site.
2.Simplify Your Site’s Architecture
It is hard to make a simple website. That’s right. It is tough to make a simple website that is easy for your audience to navigate through.
People love simpler websites overbearing ones. So, how could you simplify your site’s architecture?
The golden rule is to limit the number of ads on your site. People visit your site to read your content, not to watch advertisements.
I have come across websites where I had to spend at least one minute to close all the pop-up ads, and eventually, I left the site without even reading the content that I came for.
Make sure that there aren’t any ads on your homepage, and you use the minimal amount of ads in your article and sidebars.
Make your Homepage simple
You don’t want to add multiple colors and columns that show a gazillion amount of articles. Make your homepage as simple as possible.
Design it in a way that your audience will connect with your website and fall in love with your articles.
To make your website as simple as possible, limit the number of items in your navigation bar to 7 or less.
Some websites provide mega menus with multiple options, which will be overwhelming for their users.
For example, take a look at IBM’s website. They divide their main menu into six different sections, and some of them have another list with more than ten options.
Keep it simple; you don’t want to scare away your audience.
3.Optimize Your Content For on-page SEO
If you want to rank higher in search results, you will have to optimize your content for Google. When Google crawls your website, it must understand what your website and its content are about.
So On-Page Search Engine Optimization is a-go-go!
How can you optimize your content for SEO? Let’s see.
You might have already heard about heading tags, right?
When you write an article, you have to optimize your headings with these tags.
First, you have to optimize your content structure. Divide your contents into headings and subheadings. Then wrap your titles with heading tags.
These tags should follow an ordered structure. Your main heading should be wrapped under the h1 tag, and all the subheadings under it should be wrapped with H2 tags.
Usually, when you are using a WordPress theme, the title of the page is automatically wrapped with an H1 tag. A page should contain only a single h1 tag. So when you are writing your article, make sure that it starts with an H2 tag.
Make sure that you include your keywords in your headings. Since you wrap your headings with H tags, Google will give more importance to the words used in those headings.
If your article is about how to start a blog, then your heading should at least mention the words “start a blog,” right?
Going a little creative can cause some sort of confusion to the crawlers. It might make it hard for the bots to understand what the page is about.
So make sure that you inject your primary keywords into those headings.
Lastly, make sure that your heading is short, sweet, and interesting. Tell the user what the section is going to be about, and that’s it.
Internal linking is an essential part of SEO optimization and also the most neglected. Everyone always forgets about this part.
A well internal linked site can see a massive boost in its ranking. Internal linking is the process of linking one page of your site to another page of your website.
Let’s take an example, assume that you have already written a post about Off-Page SEO under the “guide” category. When you are writing the next article, make sure to link your first post.
You can link the Off-Page SEO post with the help of an anchor text mentioned in your new post. This will make it easier for the bots to crawl your entire site.
A website can be a group of unrelated information with no apparent central theme. Some sites write random articles that have no relation to its original niche.
For example, what will happen when a website whose main theme is biking, starts to write about boats. It doesn’t make sense, right?
Determine the central theme of your content, then organize your post according to it.
Make a precise organization of your topic by subdividing it. If you are writing about bikes, then divide your main subject (bikes) into different categories like road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, etc.
Then write posts for each category. A better structural organization could boost your ranking.
Alt Text In Images
Google bots crawl the HTML code of your site and understand what the content is about.
When you are adding an image to your website, and don’t forget to add the alternative text to that image. If the image is used purely for decorative purposes, then you could skip this step. By using a proper alternative text, you could increase your traffic through Google image results.
Make sure that you include some of the keywords in your alt text so that it will rank higher in the search results.
Schema is a code that you put on your website to help the search engines to display more informative results for users.
If you have used rich snippets, you will understand what schema is all about. If you haven’t, don’t worry, we will talk about it later in this article.
There are many types of schema that you can use. There are HowTo schema, FAQ schema, Review schema, and many more.
The image below shows an example of a FAQ schema.
Since they added a FAQ schema to their page, Google will fetch that schema and add it to the search result when a user searches for a particular query.
There are many schema generators that you could use to generate schema for your pages.
Facebook introduced Open Graph in 2010; it promotes the integration between Facebook and other websites.
Open Graph meta tags are snippet codes that control how a URL is displayed when shared on any social networking sites.
For example, an article without Open Graph meta tags shared on Facebook will look like this.
And an article with Open Graph meta tags shared on Facebook will look like this.
Open Graph allows you to create a new title and a description that is intended for social networking sites.
Your original title has to contain keywords so that it would rank higher in research results.
With the help of the Open Graph, you can create an entirely different title.
People usually don’t connect with titles that are stuffed with keywords. So it is vital to make an eye-catching title when you are promoting your content through Facebook or Twitter.
4.Optimizing For Rich results and featured snippets
Rich snippets, also known as Rich Results, are typical Google search results with additional data displayed in it. The search engine retrieves this extra information from Structured Data, which is found in your HTML code.
Majority of Google search results displays the same three-piece of data:
- Title Tag
- Meta Description
Here’s an example.
These are regular snippets.
Rich snippets take a standard snippet and add rich results to it.
Here’s an example of a rich snippet.
Rich snippets are more eye-catching than regular search results, which can eventually lead to higher organic CTR.
5.Optimize For Mobile
Most people use their mobile devices to surf the internet. People who are accessing your website through their mobile devices should have a great user experience.
Google has made it clear that the sites that are not responsive won’t rank higher in search results. So if your WordPress theme isn’t responsive, then it is better to change it right now.
Backlink plays a massive role in your website ranking. Backlinks have the power to make your site rank higher in search results.
Most people start spamming their links everywhere to obtain backlinks. But remember: quality is better than quantity.
It is always better to get a backlink from a high Domain Authority site than multiple links from low DA sites.
Link diversity plays a significant role in your rankings. Make sure that you get backlinks from several websites. It is better to get ten backlinks from different websites than to get ten backlinks from the same site.
Backlinks from a relevant site (to your niche) provide more value to your website than backlinks from a different niche.
Google has made it clear that the backlinks from a relevant site will provide more value to your ranking than links from any other websites.
So make sure that you receive quality links from authority sites of your niche.
7.Share Your Content
Don’t think that your job is done after publishing a great piece of content. You will have to market it to your audience for greater visibility.
Share your post on forums and social networking sites. Your audience has to see your content to appreciate it, so make sure that you promote your content in a significant way.
I mentioned earlier that you have to make quality backlinks from relevant sites. Guest blogging is one of the best ways to do this.
Most of the top authority sites in every niche, accept guest blogs from their users. You will have to contact them with a great piece of content that is unique and provides value to their users.
If they approve your content, they will provide a backlink to your site, which will boost your ranking.
9.Disavow Bad Links
Low-quality links can destroy your website. If you obtain backlinks from multiple spam websites, Google will automatically believe that your website is also a spam site.
It is better to do a site audit once in a while, to find out all the low-quality links, and then disavow those links. You could see a boost in your search result after disavowing those low-quality links.
10.Market Your Content
If you are not using a content marketing strategy to expand your website reach, then you are already losing your potential subscribers to your competitors.
Implementing a content marketing strategy means you are playing the long game because customers buy when they are ready to buy, not when you are prepared for them to buy.
Creating a content marketing strategy is easier than you think. Many resources are available on the Internet, which would help you build a great plan that could boost your profits.
Yes, you have to be patient. A brand new domain will take time to gain some authority. Do all the steps that are mentioned above and repeat them over time. You will reap the benefits shortly.
